I’ll be honest: I love brownies. Like, really love them.
Especially those small everyday moments — grabbing something sweet during a lunch break at work, or sitting down after a Sunday meal when everything feels a bit slower. That’s when brownies just hit perfectly.
But almost every time, there’s that little annoying feeling afterwards: “Did I really need that?” 😅
Not because you shouldn’t treat yourself — but because classic brownies are just… heavy. Lots of sugar, lots of butter, lots of calories.
At some point I started wondering: Is there a way to make brownies that are actually delicious, but don’t come with that same calorie overload?
So I experimented a bit — simpler ingredients, less sugar, less fat… but still aiming for that rich, chocolatey, satisfying brownie experience.
And this is the result:

Ingredients (6–8 brownies)
- 2 ripe bananas
- 2 eggs
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp oat flour (or blended oats)
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Optional: a handful of dark chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Mash the bananas in a bowl until smooth.
(The riper they are, the sweeter your brownies will be.) - Add the eggs and mix until everything is well combined and creamy.
- Stir in the cocoa powder, oat flour, honey, and baking powder.
Mix until you get a smooth batter. - Fold in the dark chocolate chips if you’re using them.
- Pour the batter into a small baking dish lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, depending on how fudgy you like them.
- Let them cool slightly (if you can resist 😄), then cut into squares.
- A typical store-bought brownie usually has around 200–300 calories (or even more) per piece.
A typical store-bought brownie usually has around 200–300 calories (or even more) per piece.
These homemade ones are only about 80–120 calories each — so for me, it feels like enjoying brownies without that usual guilty feeling afterwards 😊
I’ve noticed there’s actually a big difference in how I feel after eating regular brownies versus these ones.
Why i love them so much:
With normal store-bought brownies, it always tastes amazing in the moment — really rich, really sweet — but afterwards I often feel kind of heavy and sluggish. Almost like my body needs time to recover from it. And there’s also that small guilty feeling creeping in, like “okay… that was a bit much.”
But with these healthier brownies, it’s honestly completely different. They still satisfy that chocolate craving, but afterwards I just feel… normal. Not overly full, not tired, not weighed down. More like I treated myself without overdoing it.
And I think that’s what I like most:
You still get that cozy, sweet brownie moment — just without your body feeling like it has to deal with something “too much” afterwards 😊
