Healthy Brownies for Gut Health (Easy & Low-Calorie)

Healthy fudgy chocolate brownies made with bananas, cocoa powder, and oat flour for a gut-friendly dessert.

I have to admit it—I absolutely love brownies.

For me, they’re the perfect little treat after dinner, with a cup of coffee in the afternoon, or whenever I’m craving something chocolatey. The only problem is that classic brownies usually leave me feeling a little too full afterwards. They’re often loaded with sugar and butter, and while they taste amazing, they don’t always make me feel my best.

That’s exactly why I wanted to create a lighter version.

After trying a few different combinations, I ended up with these brownies. They’re soft, fudgy, naturally sweetened with ripe bananas, and made with simple ingredients I almost always have at home. They satisfy my chocolate cravings without feeling overly heavy, and that’s exactly why I keep making them.

Ingredients (6–8 brownies)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp oat flour (or blended oats)
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Optional: a handful of dark chocolate chips

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Mash the bananas until completely smooth.
The riper they are, the sweeter your brownies will be.
  3. Add the eggs and whisk until creamy.
  4. Stir in the cocoa powder, oat flour, honey, and baking powder until you have a smooth batter.
  5. Fold in the dark chocolate chips if you’re using them.
  6. Pour the batter into a small baking dish lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bake for 18–22 minutes, depending on how fudgy you like your brownies.
  8. Let them cool for a few minutes before cutting them into squares.

🦠 How to Make These Brownies More Gut-Friendly

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that improving your gut health doesn’t mean giving up desserts. I don’t believe in cutting out the foods you love. Instead, I like making small changes that make my favorite recipes a little more nourishing while still tasting like a real treat.

Here are a few simple ways I like to make these brownies even more gut-friendly:

🥣 Add 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed

Ground flaxseed is one of my favorite ingredients because it mixes into the batter without changing the taste. It adds extra fiber, which helps support healthy digestion.

🌱 Stir in 1 teaspoon of chia seeds

Chia seeds are another easy way to increase the fiber content while keeping the brownies soft and moist.

🫐 Serve them with fresh berries

Blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries pair perfectly with chocolate and are naturally rich in plant compounds that support a healthy gut microbiome.

🥛 Enjoy them with plain Greek yogurt or kefir

This is one of my favorite combinations. It adds protein, makes the brownies more filling, and is an easy way to include fermented foods in your day.

🍫 Choose dark chocolate chips

If you’re adding chocolate chips, I recommend using dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. It has a richer chocolate flavor and contains less sugar than regular milk chocolate.

Gut Health Tip: You don’t have to make every meal perfect. Small habits—like eating a little more fiber, adding berries, or including fermented foods regularly—can make a real difference over time.

❤️ Why I Love These Brownies

A typical store-bought brownie usually contains around 200–300 calories (or even more) per piece.

These homemade brownies come in at around 80–120 calories each, depending on the ingredients you use.

For me, the biggest difference isn’t just the calories—it’s how I feel afterwards.

Whenever I eat a regular brownie from a bakery or supermarket, I often end up feeling overly full and sluggish. It tastes great in the moment, but afterwards I usually wish I hadn’t eaten it.

These brownies are different.

They still satisfy that chocolate craving, they’re soft and fudgy, and they genuinely feel like a proper dessert. But afterwards I don’t feel weighed down. I simply enjoy them and move on with my day.

And that’s exactly what I love most about this recipe.

❤️ Final Thoughts

One thing I’ve realized is that healthy eating—and especially gut health—isn’t about giving up your favorite foods. It’s about making small choices that fit into your everyday life.

That’s why I keep coming back to these brownies. They taste indulgent, they’re easy to make, and with a few simple additions like flaxseed, chia seeds, berries, or yogurt, they become even more supportive of a healthy gut.

To me, that’s what sustainable healthy eating is all about: enjoying the foods you love while making them just a little better for your body. And honestly, I think that’s something you can actually stick with. 🍫🫐
